Comparing The Times, The Independent, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph which are some of the famous newspapers in UK, it is phenomenal that the editors plan the layout of their papers very carefully because they want to keep their readers and attract new ones. It is easy to find out some difference among them, and i will give two most important differences:
Firstly, each of them have the own special feature.
The Times was named as the UK's leading daily newspaper for business people in the British Business Survey 2005. The main section news in the first half of the paper, and world news following. The business pages begin on the centre spread, and are followed by The Register, containing obituaries, Court & Social and the like. The sport section is at the end of the main paper. The Independent is politically left-leaning. The paper's editorial line favours the implementation of proportional representation and the tackling of climate change through governmental measures. The Guardian is founded by textile traders and merchants. The Guardian had a reputation as ‘an organ of the middle class’. It is considered British centre-left as US politics are generally further to the right of the UK.The Daily Telegraph is a British broadsheet newspaper. It includes separate Money, Home and Health, Sport, Travel and Business suppliments.
Secondly, it is interesting that the same news in different newspapers is reported in different style. Such as the news about Flight BA038 accident' in January 18th 2008, The Times and The Daily Telegraph report this news in the first page, and The Daily Telegraph spend 3 pages on this new while The Time just use 1 page. But The Independent report it in page 5, and The Guardian report it in page 3. Why do they report the same new but in different page? I think that is because the main point newspapers report generally and want to attract reader is different.
There are still many differences among the different newspaper except the two i gave, for example the layout, the format, the history, the circulation and some supplement.
